salesman, etc.. Van Martin TALCOTT and Maymie Leona BAIR were married
on 18 Aug 1915 in Newton, Jasper County, Iowa. The following
is a report of the BAIR - TALCOTT wedding printed in the local Newton newspaper
at the time:
NEWTON, IOWA, THURSDAY AUGUST 26, 1915
BAIR - TALCOTT WEDDING
On Wednesday evening of last week, August 18th, the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Victor O. Bair on East Ninth Street South, was the scene of a very happy and
interesting wedding ceremony when the host and hostess gave in marriage, Miss
Maymie, their only daughter, to Mr. Van M. Talcott, a prominent young farmer
in Dow City, in Crawford county. The guests present were only near relatives
and a few friends of the bride and groom, but a very merry company just the same.
Mendelsshon's wedding march was played by Miss Gladys Talcott, a sister of
the groom, as the bridal party descended the stairway and took their position
within a floral bower in the parlor where they were met by Dr. George C. Williams,
pastor of the Congregational church, who with the pretty ring service, performed
the ceremony which made the lovers husband and wife. The brides wedding gown
was of ivory satin, with pearl and silk trimmings, and she carried a large bouquet
of bride's roses and lilies0of-the-valley, Miss Elma Kling in a beautiful dress
of pink crepe de chine, served as bridesmaid and the groom's best man was his
brother, C. R. Talcott of Mapleton. Following the ceremony and a season of congratulations,
an elaborate three-course wedding supper was served by the bride's mother, assisted
by Miss Ada Kling and Miss Juanita Bair, the dining room and table decorations
being sweet peas and other garden flowers.
Maymie is a native of Jasper county, and for the past twenty years has lived
in Newton, where her charming personality and genial disposition have won for
her a wide circle of devoted friends She graduated from our high school with
the 1912 class, and then studied for a year in Grinnell College, which was followed
by two years of successful teaching. It was while teaching at Arion in Crawford
county, that she and Mr. Talcott "met by chance, the usual way", and
the pretty romance began which culminated in the plighting of marriage vows last
Wednesday evening. Mr. Talcott has made a fine impression on all of Maymie's
friends, who are sure that she has given her heart and hand to one that is worthy
of the trust. The bride and groom remained in Newton until Saturday, when they
left for a honeymoon visit with his people at Arion, after which they will settle
down like real married folks on the groom's farm two miles out of Dow City.
The bride and groom received many valuable and beautiful gifts of silver,
china, linen, etc. The groom's present to the bride was a chest of solid silver;
Mr. Talcott's mother's gift was a 26-piece set of silver, and the bride's parents
presented them with a check for $100. From the Fleur de Lis Club Maymie received
an elegant case of Sterling silver teaspoons. The bride and groom presented
Maymie's mother with an elegant necklace and lavaliere with diamond and pearl
setting, which she values very highly.
Among the relatives present were the mother, sister and brother of the groom,
Mrs A. R. Talcott and Miss Gladys, of Arion, Iowa, and C. R. Talcott, of Mapleton,
Mr. and Mrs. W. R. VanDyke, Mrs Retta Bair and Miss Juanita Bair of Baxter.

Victor Otho BAIR and Austa J. VANDYKE) was born on 1 Jan 1895 in Baxter, Jasper
County, Iowa. She was adopted in 1898 in Newton, Jasper County, Iowa.
She died of Cancer of the Blood on 20 Aug 1950 in Columbia, Boone County, Missouri.
Mamie, daughter of Frank Reitenbaugh and Nora (Arney) Reitenbaugh
was born in Baxter, Jasper Co., Iowa, Jan. 1, 1895.
According to my sister, Doris Norene, Victor O. and Austa Bair who lived
at the time in Newton, Iowa, were out for a drive in their Pierce-Arrow automobile
on a Sunday afternoon in Baxter, Iowa when they noticed a little girl playing
alone on the railroad tracks. They stopped and picked her up and began to inquire
at nearby homes to see if they could find where she lived. Upon finding her
mother, Nora Reitenbaugh, they began to visit with her. They found that Mamie's
father, Frank, was an alcoholic and Nora was having an extremely hard time financially
and was unable to care properly for the five children she had at that time.
Victor and Austa returned later and talked with Nora about wanting to adopt Mamie
and raise her as their daughter. After considerable discussion, and I am sure
much persuasion, Nora agreed and Mamie was adopted in 1898 by Victor O. and Austa
J. Bair as Maymie Leona Bair in Newton, Jasper County, Iowa.
Frank Reitenbaugh was born in 1862, in Elton, Canbria County, Pennsylvania.
Nora Arney was born in 1867, in New Amsterdam, Harrison County, Indiana. Van
Martin TALCOTT and Maymie Leona BAIR had the following children:
